OTTAWA RIVER STREAM ENHANCEMENT FLOOD ABATEMENT PROPOSAL

Nearly 2500 letters went out this week to residents impacted by a request to remove leaning trees, logs and other debris from the Hog Creek area in Allen County.  The letters notified residents of a meeting to be held on Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at 10:30 AM at the Show Arena on the Allen County Fairgrounds.

“This meeting is just an introduction to the project and the people involved,” said Dan Ellerbrock, project supervisor for the Allen Soil and Water Conservation District.  “Land owners from both counties have requested that our office hold meetings and hearings to find out what the community thinks about the project.  At this point, that’s all we’re doing.  If there is support, we will continue on to the next phase.”

The informational meeting will be followed a month later on September 14, 2005 at 10:30 am with a Preliminary Hearing on the project.  Citizens will be allowed to voice their support or opposition to the project at that time.  This will also be held at the Show Arena on the Allen County Fairgrounds.

“It is important for landowners to realize that anything downstream from their property is part of their watershed (Visit this site to view watershed).  So work in Allen County can impact the flow of water in Hardin County,” said Ellerbrock.  “If your water drains into the creek, you are using the portions downstream, even if your property is not adjacent.”

If the project is approved, a one-time assessment fee will be charged to residents in the watershed area.  The minimum charge is $25.00 per parcel, regardless of the size.

If you are unable to attend the meetings, you are welcome to submit your ideas in writing.  Mail your letters to the Allen SWCD, 3900 Campus Avenue Suite A, Lima, Ohio 45804.
